Allison here. You probably already know that I live in New York City and go to NYU for my master's. Yada yada yada. So I was thinking one day about what Monkee landmarks are around and I totally forgot that Davy used to own a store in Greenwich Village called Zilch. Back in the day, it was part clothing boutique, part drug paraphenelia superstore. Today, well... let's find out!
Our journey begins where all good NYC journeys begin: ON DA SUBWAY!

This is the NQRW line. I took the N because it HAPPENED to stop at 8th Street that day (usually I take the R... all very fascinating, I know). This is where I get off when I go to school! YAY.
Our journey continues down 8th Street until we hit Washington Square Park. Back in the 60s, lots of jams were held here on Sundays and I'm pleased and slightly repulsed to say that the area is still chock full of buskers, who are starting to come out of hiding since the weather is getting a little nicer.

Unfortunately, they ripped up the area by the arch because they wanted to move the fountain back about half a foot or something shitty like that. ANYWAY. We continue on through the park to Washington Square South, aka, Positively Fourth Street. About a block down is Thompson Street.

We continue down Thompson until we cross Third Street. We continue walking until we see on the right, 217 Thompson St., the location of Zilch!! Behold the majesty...

Today, Zilch is something of a graphic design storefront, I think. In any case, it's located right beside the famous (I think.. at least to me it is) Chess Forum. I've walked past this place millions of times and never knew it was Davy's store.
I think I was freaking out the people who worked in there with my picture taking. Whoops. However as I was standing there, some other people came by and took pictures. It was probably a coincidence, but whatever.
The coolest thing is, in my opinion, the doors. I know they have to be original. Take a good look at the door knob-type things:

The "Z"s HAVE to be from Zilch, don't you think?
And as proof that I've been there, as well as showing off my favorite pair of shoes (yes, those are holes in them.. fuck you, I love these shoes and I'll never throw them out), check it out. I'd like to say it's me standing where any number of Monkees and cool people stood, but that sidewalk has probably been replaced a thousand times. At least I occupied the same airspace as they did! MAYBE EVEN A YOUNG HOT MICHAEL NESMITH. *dies*

And this is me looking like a tool hipster with long bangs as I prepare to end my adventure to Zilch...

...and pay a visit to one of my favorite rekkid stores, Generation Records.

I hope you enjoyed my trip to Zilch. Stay tuned for more Monkees-themed adventures in NYC, as soon as I think of other places to go. If you've got any ideas, let me know.
